India's Communist Friends

India is being subverted from below by a widespread and growing Maoist insurgency.

Meanwhile, China, Russia, Iran and Cuba are trying to draw India into ever closer economic and political relationships.

Cuban Minister of External Relations, Felipe Perez Roque, is to arrive here Wednesday on a two-day visit.

In his first-ever visit to India, he will be accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister, Marcos Rodrigues Costa and several other senior officials, said an official press release.

The Cuban FM will meet Minister of State for External Affairs, Anand Sharma and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss further expansion of ties between the two friend countries.

Bilateral cooperation in different areas, including agriculture, science and technology, sports, health and energy, was reviewed in the sixth Indo-Cuban Joint Commission meeting held in Havana in February 2006.

The Cuban government has awarded two off-shore oil exploration blocs directly and another six blocs as part of a Consortium to ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL).

Meanwhile, an MOU on sports cooperation was signed during the February visit to Cuba of the Minister of Sports, Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar.
