Origins of the Anarchist/Maori Radical Alliance 5 (Final)

Part 4 here

As I have shown in previous posts, the "Urewera 17" is comprised mainly of anarchists and Maori radicals inspired by foreign indigenous revolutionary movements, particularly the Mexican Zapatistas.

But who brought these people together? Who stitched together an alliance of mainly Wellington based anarchists and Tuhoe allied Maori radicals into what some claim was an embryonic guerilla army?

Unfortunately I am not privy to this information, but one individual is a possible candidate-Teanau Tuiono.

This man, who I have profiled before is an avid Zapatista-to the point of giving his son the middle name of...Zapatista.

He has been a leading activist in the New Zealand branch of the Zapatista inspired international radical network-People's Global Action.

Tuiono's home was searched during the October 15th anti terror raids-he was not arrested, but it is believed he has also undergone training in the Ureweras.

Tuiono is an active networker, both internationally and locally.

He is connected in some way to more members of the "Urewera 17" than anyone else I know.

Teanau Tuiono would have gotten to know Tame Iti as least as early as 1996. That year, when Tuiono was still at Auckland University, he stood, with Iti as a Parliamentary candidate for Eva Rickard's radical Mana Maori Movement.

For several years, Tuiono has worked with "Urewera 17" webmeister Te Rangikaiwhiria (Rangi) Kemara on the executive of the Maori Internet Society, Aotearoa Cafe and the pro Zapatista Maori Independence Website.

In the early '00s Teanau Tuiono's close associate, Kalani Tarawa worked with Rangi Kemara moderating a UN financed international indigenous people's networking website.

In the early '00s Teanau Tuiono linked up with Wellington based anarchists to form the New Zealand branch of People's Global Action.

"Urewera 17" arrestee Emily Bailey worked with Tuiono on this project as almost certainly did two other arrestees, Tim/Ira Bailey and Valerie Morse.

For the past few years Tuiono has been active in the anarchist run newsite Indymedia.

Two other "Urewera 17" arrestees were also involved-Omar Hamed and the as yet unnamed Swiss national.

In early 2007 Teanau Tuiono was the leading organisor of the Nice n Native gathering at a Waikato marae. This gathering brought together Maori, North American Indian, Australian Aboriginal and Indigenous Filipino activists to discuss music, culture and revolution.

Other key people involved were Emily Bailey, Tim/Ira Bailey and Rangi Kemara.

Ati Teepa was also involved. Later he was questioned, but not arrested in the October 15th anti-terror raids. His brother, Maraki Teepa was arrested and still faces charges.

The Teepa brothers are nephews of Tame Iti.

Teanau Tuiono also been the leading spokesman of PGA's New Zealand afiliate, Aotearoa Educators. Maraea Teepa is AE's latest spokesperson. She is Tuhoe and is believed to be a relative of the Teepa brothers.

In this series I believe I have proven that the "Urewera 17" are not an isolated aberration.

They are merely the tip of a revolutionary triangle that reaches from the Eastern Bay of Plenty mountains and Wellington's Aro Valley to the Zapatista strongholds of Southern Mexico.

Teanau Tuiono has connections to every corner of the triangle.

I doubt we have seen the last of him-or his friends in the "Urewera 17"

Thanks for doing this research, Trevor. (Btw, you might want to revisit your old page about teanau-tuiono-and-tino-rangatiratanga.html -- it's got a bit of spam on the end.)

"In 2006 Tuiono was active in the editorial collective of the anarchist run newsite Indymedia."

No he wasn't.

"In 2006 Tuiono was active in the leadership of the anarchist run newsite Indymedia."

Again, no, he wasn't. He hasn't been involved in running Indymedia in any way, shape or form in the entire time I've been involved (which I'm not going to tell you, but stretches back before 2006).

Have changed it again Asher. Hope you're satisfied with this.

Not particularly - while I wouldn't be surprised if he has posted a comment or an article on AIMC (whether under his own name or anonymously), I certainly can't remember any specific ones over the past few years. I don't see any way you can justify a statement such as "For the past few years Tuiono has been active in the anarchist run newsite Indymedia."

Not just image suppression, but name suppression also. Take it down trev. Sheez.

You can't hand an anarchist a line like "hope you're satisfied with this," Trevor, and expect him not to try to rewrite your entire site.

If you don't mind a little unsolicited advice - make sure your facts are right before you publish - then you can spit in anyone's eyes who tries to edit you to death (as Asher seems to be doing).

Thanks for reporting on the socialist/"progressive" agenda's encroachments where you live. Here, we have a slick front man for the usual crew of bong water-drinkers who may wind up President. That's all right, though - he's promised Putin that he'll disarm the US unilaterally.
