Boycott Bolshevik "Body Shop"

According to NZPA, "Body Shop" is getting in behind behind Green MP Sue Bradford's campaign to remove the legal defence of "reasonable force" for parents punishing their children.

"Ms Bradford has a member's bill in Parliament to repeal the law involved - section 59 of the Crimes Act, on which public submissions have been called.

Yesterday Barrie Thomas, director of The Body Shop New Zealand, said outlets throughout the country will be encouraging the public to sign a petition that would be presented to Parliament in late February.

The stores were starting a campaign for a full repeal of section 59 with the message: "Kids are unbeatable"."

I have no objection to businesses campaigning on social or political issues-in fact I applaud it. Unfortunately "Body Shop" seems to pick all the socialist ones.

Whether you agree with smacking or not, Sue Bradford's Bill will not lessen abuse of children one iota. It will, however, substantially weaken parental authority over and responsibility for, their children.

This is exactly the opposite direction in which we need to go. Bradford is a hard core socialist and socialism has always attacked the integrity of the family. Even if you personally oppose smacking you should fight this bill if you believe that families are an institution worth preserving.

I've been personally boycotting "Body Shop" for years.

I hope you'll do likewise.

I would not boycott the Body Shop, ever. As an ACT supporter and voter, I am also concerned with animal welfare, and the Body Shop only sells products that have not been tested on animals. For that reason, I support them.

Fair enough Harry. Nothing aganst humane treatment of animals, I simply see human rights as more important. In my opinion many of the BS's campaigns over the years have been detrimental to human welfare.

I'm with you Trevor, I haven't bought anything from the Body Shop since I saw they were against farrowing crates (different to dry sow crates).

Besides, Lush is much nicer :)

Why do you like farrowing crates, andrew? Do you enjoy spending time in them?

Yes good stuff, see my blog for further commentary on the dodgy dealings of the PHA as well, who were also mentioned in the Body Shop article

Henry,
My fondness for farrowing crates is purely for the fact they significantly cut down and in many cases prevent incidences of piglets killed by rollover.

If boycotting the Bodyshop helps defeat this bill then we should all do it; if you can handle a hiding at age 6 you can do anything at 20. Everyone I know who was never smacked has turned out borderline mental. They then go on to complete Psychology degrees and vote Labour/Greens. Following that the "brightest" ones use their university credentials to write parenting books condemning smacking. This then inspires more parents to avoid smacking, subsequently, their mental kids go and study psychology... It's another vicious cycle.
