Carter's Socialist Principles Destroy a Dream

There will be some very unhappy people today. After ten years of following the law to get consent for a Whangamata Marina, the proponents succeeded with the Environment Court ruling in their favour.

But today the Court has been over-ruled by Environment Minister Chris Carter.



The Minister makes his decision on the basis of a few hour's lobbying. Never mind the Environment Court which spent many days and volumes of paper considering the proposal and agreeing it was not significantly detrimental to the environment.

There is no appeal from the Minister's decision. Their only recourse is for a change of Government.

After many years and a million dollars in costs, a dream has gone down the gurgler because a socialist Labour Minister doesn't care about property rights.

Here's a summation of Chris Carter's maiden speech in Parliament from the Sunday Star Times of 20th of March 1994

Carter.... said "I learned, as probably few members of this house have learned, what it actually feels like to be at the bottom of the heap, and what effect oppression and discrimination can have on ones own life." He said his own situation led to a "real empathy" with those in society who because of their race, sex, or economic circumstances are judged to be less than equal. He said he was a democratic socialist, and he saw a pressing need to implement socialist principles. "We know, that if the market is left unchallenged, social injustice will be heightened...the law of the unregulated market is, in the end, the law of the jungle, where only the strongest can survive or flourish until the whole edifice collapses."

This socialist has destroyed not just one dream, but has aborted countless others that will never come to fruition, because property rights and legal certainty are now so badly compromised in this country.
