Core Council Business, or "Sewage Socialism"?
More lunacy from the People's Republic of Christchurch.
Many people (not me though) would accept that sewage disposal is a core local government task.
However Christchurch City Council has taken it several steps further.
According to today's Press, a Mrs Fiona Summerfield of Hillmorton has won some funding from the City Council's community waste minimisation fund.
Mrs Summerfield disapproves of the pollution potential and cost of disposable nappies and wants everybody in Christchurch to pay to make her happy.
"Summerfield's proposal allows suppliers of washable nappies to make starter packs of their products available to parents of young children at a reduced price. The fund will subsidise a $60 package by $20...."
Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore, who implored people to use washable nappies in his speech after the last election is enthusiastic about the trial".
Where's the money coming from to fund this "sewage socialism" Garry? From the money you charge people to put up a tent, perhaps?

Uuuh, from the City Council's community waste minimisation fund??
I love the subtle downplay:
"Mrs Summerfield disapproves of the pollution potential and cost of disposable nappies and wants everybody in Christchurch to pay to make her happy."
pollution potential?!?!?
Last year 6,600+ babies were born in Canterbury. Based on this figure, there are now the equivalent of 163,000+ rubbish bags full of filthy nappies (that don't readily biodegrade) sitting in landfill from the first year of those babies' lives alone!
Assuming that a good number of those wrap up the poo with the nappy (instead of following the manufacturer's instructions to tip it out first), the amount of landfilled raw human waste from last year's 6,600 babies is 90+ tonnes.
If you don't like the "sewage socialism", there's something you could do that's even more powerful than ranting on a blog. Namely, you could petition the council to amend the LTCCP to remove the provisions and funding for waste minimisation schemes, since that's really what seems to be at the core of your objection.
