About Angela Davis

Born in Alabama in 1944, Angela Davis is an African - American philosopher who was associated with the Black Panther Party in the 1960s and 1970's, as well as the Communist Party of the United States of America.

She first achieved nationwide notoriety when she was linked to the murder of the judge Harold Haley during an attempted Black Panther prison break; she fled underground, and was subject to an intense manhunt.

After 18 months as a fugitive, she was captured, arrested, tried, and eventually acquitted in one of the most famous trials of recent U.S. history.

Angela Davis is currently Professor of History of Consciousness at the University of California and Presidential Chair at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Professor Davis' research interests include: feminism, African American studies, critical theory, popular music culture and social consciuosness and the philosphy of punishment (women's prisons).

"She aligned herself with the brutal Marxist Black Panthers"

Yes those Panthers were particularly brutal. They even had programmes going where they provided free meals to poor children and ran homework centres to help them with their school work. In fact their name comes from the particularly aggressive animal, the panther, that only ever lashes out violently if it is cornered and its life is directly threatened.

Cheers for keeping me posted on this Trev. Was so excited to see that Professor Davis is coming to my university. I will most certainly be going along to hear what she has to say.

Touchingly naive Cameron. While the BP's no doubt had their good side, they were also pretty bad people.

Hardcore Maoists, the BP's were involved in heavy criminal activities including murders, robbery and torture.

It was a particularly brutal BP murder that led David Horowitz to make his break from the hard left and become the scourge of socialists he is today.

When you go along Cameron, please ask Prof D if she is still a member of the the CPUSA breakaway organisation, the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism for me?

I've helped you out, how about returning the favour-cheers

How about being helped out from the likes of Fidel Castro and having the Black Panther leadership actually reside in Havana? Or perhaps Davis traveling to the police state of East Germany and receiving the "Lenin Peace Prize"? Will Davis also comment on black Africans being attacked by neo-Nazi thugs in Russia, the same Russia that aided Davis during the Cold War? Or is she just going to suggest how blacks who live in the West are always "oppressed" at the same time, blacks living under brutal Communist-Soviet backed dictatorships such as Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe would probably rather live here in the U.S.

Hey Trev it looks like she still is a member. Well at least she is on their advisory board. http://www.cc-ds.org/advisory_bd.html

My computer monitor has stuffed up a bit so most text comes up very small, so I hope this list is still up to date.

Thanks for that Cameron.

As an anarchist, I din't think you'd be that keen on a hard core socialist like Angela davis?

No worries Trev.

While I find some of Professor Davis' past views on the Eastern Bloc a bit uncomfortable I believe she has some very interesting ideas, such as prison abolition and also is very informed on the struggle against racism and imperialism. As a history student, with a keen interest in 1960s/70s USA, I think this is an excellent opportunity to hear from someone who has made history. It's not everyday we get a Black Panther visiting Auckland.

She can come and have dinner with me anytime. I have no doubt she would engage in some interesting dialogue.
My present partner is a Tigerlily, so a Blank Panther would add much to the menagerie.

'You wouldn't want to invite Davis if she happen to be a former white KKKer or a white neo-Nazi, would you? But the racist organization known as the Black Panthers and other assorted black racialist radicals get a free pass?'

I used to think the BPP was the Black equivalent of the KKK when I was about 11 years old. Then I actually did some reading and found they were nothing like the KKK. The Black Panthers pushed for, what they referred to as, 'intercommunalism'. Today this is usually referred to as multiculturalism. The KKK wanted nothing like that.

As far as I'm aware the Black Panthers didn't go around burning down and bombing white churches, with children inside. Also the Black Panthers didn't infiltrate the Police to give themselves legal impunity.

How about that network of drug smuggling the Black Panthers were quite involved? Their alignment with the Communist dictator Fidel Castro? What about the likes of the Black Liberation Army which engaged in open terrorism against police officers and average Americans? Many members of the BLA were also members of the Black Panthers or were sympathizers toward their cause.

I certainly guess it's okay if you happen to be a black radical Marxist racialist to go and blow up and kill innocent people, the same laws don't apply there to white racialists who do the same thing.

I guess it "must be cool" to be a black racist. Gee, why does that always seem to get a pass? But if Davis happen to be either a former KKKer or a neo-Nazi thug, doubt she would receive the same warm welcome from apologists to black racists.

No good turning your back and hope she goes away. I'm going to her rally to hear what she has to say.
I keep an open mind these days. The world is full of bigots already, it dont need another one to make up the numbers.
I'll sent my report.

I don't care if she comes, as long as the taxpayer isn't paying for it.

The "taxpayer" pays for everything. The trick is to find a way onto the gravey train and grab some steak to go with the sauce.

the event is not 'back only', in fact ive never heard angela davis say anything racist, nor anything recently. the black panther's had white comrades 'the yippies'. so thats proves they were not black only in ideology. though some were into black separatism. some black power advocates today want reperations from european countries (britain..etc) for the economic looting of africa and the horror of slavery.

still real looking forward to seeing angela speak, bet no act cowards to a demo outside

mah29001 I really hope you are joking and are really not so simple minded that you actually believe that there is any connection between neo-nazis and communist or socialist, neo-nazis are a fascist organization, fascist far right communists far left, not the same right, I am speaking slowly do you understand. Another thing I hope you realize Fidel Castro played an integral role in putting an end to apartheid, he is a hero in many African Countries, Nelson Mandela considers him a close friend. Also are you aware that Fidel sponsored many many Americans to become Medical Doctors in Cuba for absolutely free, even their housing and meals were paid for, in return all they had to do when they returned to the U.S. was practice medicine in an underprivileged area . Gosh Fidel sounds super evil doesn't he? but please do not believe me, you have been believing everything you hear for much to long already, do some research yourself, don't worry I have read your posts and I can tell you with certainty you are in no danger of becoming smart, but maybe just maybe you may become informed. Good Luck with that.
