Franks to Seek National Nomination

From the NZ Herald

Former Act MP Stephen Franks is seeking to run for the National Party in the affluent seat of Wellington Central at the next election.

Mr Franks, who was ejected from Parliament in 2005 when Act got enough votes for only two MPs, told the Weekend Herald he had been wooed by National before but felt the time was right to put his name forward for selection.

While I'm disappointed that Stephen won't be standing on the ACT banner, I'm stoked that he wants to go back to Parliament.

Stephen could do very nicely by staying with the law, but he has unfinished business that can only be addressed in the public sphere.

Stephen is one of the finest legal minds that Parliament has seen in decades.

I wish him well and sincerely hope he makes it back in.

New Zealand will be better off if he does.

Why don't you tell us all about Stephen's leanings towards communism and his time in China in the late 70s, Trev?

You obviously don't know Stephen anon.

For a start his law practice would probably pay him several times an MPs salary.

I'm sure it would cost him huge money to go back to Parliament.

Stephen franks is an idealist who wants to make a difference.

I hope he gets the opportunity.

Anon-Stephen was part of the leftist Wellington student scene of the '70s. He went to China and he met Rewi Alley. Later he was active in the Labour Party.

Stephen still has the same idealism that took him to the far left.

Thankfully he has managed to maintain his good intentions and combine them with much better ideas.

Stephen is one reason I am a little indulgement of the youthful left.

Like Stephen, many will be on our side one day, when they realise that freedom and capitalism are tools of human liberation.

Most young people join the left out of idealism. If they can maintain that idealism and couple it with wisdom they can be great allies.

I too hope he makes it. With he and Finlayson as Minister Of Justice and Attorney General the Nats will have a legal team that labout cannot even dream about matching.

Where he is best suited I guess...not really a fan of freedom but conservative 'permission" on his terms....sad.

This won't do ACT's chances of winning Wellington Central any good.

Trevor says "Stephen is one reason I am a little indulgement of the youthful left."

This reminds me of the following quote. I don't know it's origin.

"If you are not a socialist as a youth you don't have a heart.
If you are not a capitalist as a adult you don't have a brain."

And here is a quote for all those agitating for a Maori Bantustan in NZ.

"The empires of the future are empires of the mind."

Winston Churchill

Stephen hasn't won the nomination yet.

Clearly a chance at the front bench has allowed him to put principles aside.
Its sad because act needs to consolidate its position on the right and let national and labour fight over the shift with the wind middle.

Did Stephen spit the dummy because Heather was selected as ACT's 2008 Wellington Central candidate?

No anon. Stephen has been going to Nat meetings for some time. No secrets. He made his intentions clear some time ago.
