Marxists To Stand in 2008 Election
From Indymedia
From May 30 to June 1, Workers Party (New Zealand) will be holding its 6th annual educational conference, Marxism 2008, in Auckland.
The conference will be particularly important this year because, for the first time, the Workers Party will be registering to stand in the national general election on the party list. This is the first time that a revolutionary Marxist organisation will be entering national elections throughout New Zealand...
The Workers Party must be confident of getting the 500 members required to register as a party for election puposes.
They claim to have signed up 109 new members at the recent "Big Day Out" concert in Auckland.
If this hasn't already been achieved, no doubt the Party will be making a big effort to sign up new members at university Club Days.
The Communist Party and the Socialist Unity Party used to stand in general elections but only in a few seats.
The Greens might also have a legitimate claim to that the "first Marxist party" title.
It will be interesting to see how many candidates the Workers Party is able to muster.

Committed psychiatric patients should be given the vote.
They are more rational than anyone who can vote for a Marxist party after the gulags, the murderous great leap forward, Pol Pot, and Castro's prison island.
Oh sorry! You're right. All the people floating on tyres and rafts through shark-infested seas towards Florida are just going across to tell the West we've all got it wrong!
Cubans are free only outside Cuba, but that's gonna change soon amigo!
RAM are also going to stand as an MMP party.
I thought they might anon.
Only in Auckland, or in other centres?
apparently nationwide, but for the list vote. they might stand a candidate in their core south auckland constituency.
Oh.....so Trev, are you recanting your over-eager right-winger schoolboy bullshit that everybody other than Rodders is a Marxist at heart.....even if 35 years ago ?
You're going soft My Man ! Shame, it was entertaining.....
Steve,
I would point out that when a leading light of the Workers Party (Joel Cosgrove) was standing for President of VUWSA he was asked if he was a communist. His response?
"Marxist and proud!"
What an awesome dude!
I hope they can muster 120 candidates
