Venezuela Socialists Plan to Stay

Caracas, Dec 5 The United Socialist Party of Venezuela is meeting Friday to determine the best way to achieve the constitutional amendment and allow the continuous re-election of the country's president.

"We are working speedily and have analyzed actions to follow this week," Alberto Muller, first vice president of the organization, stated Thursday.

The proposal to allow President Hugo Chavez to postulate as a candidate to the 2012 elections must be approved in a referendum, in which almost 17 million Venezuelans registered to vote have the right to participate.

Prior to that step, the initiative must be supported by the National Electoral Council with 15 percent of those registered or most of deputies to the Parliament.

For the socialists, both options are possible from the numerical point of view, because they are some 5.7 million members, and control 114 of 167 seats of the National Assembly.

Chavez authorized his followers November 30, especially the PSUV members, to mobilize to achieve the referred amendment to the Constitution
