A second explosion has ripped through the Pike River mine with no survivors expected, police say.
Superintendent Gary Knowles said the large explosion happened around 2.37pm today and they were not expecting anyone to get out alive.
They were now going into recovery mode. It was one of the most horrific things he has had to deal with as a police man.
"We had to break the news to the family and they are extremely distraught.
"I was at the mine myself when the explosion occurred. The blast was horrific. Just as severe as the first blast - and we are now moving into a recovery mode."

The miners are in my prayers. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of G*d, rest in peace. Amen.
I pray for their families...how horrific...I am certain they were trying to be optimistic and hoping for a "Chilean Miner" result...I am so sorry...may they RIP...
Based on "Most likely",I will pray for a miracle.God knows we could use miracles these days.I pray peace and strength for their families.
My condolences and prayers. Life becomes such a fleeting thing.
