Cubans Indoctrinate East Timorese Under Kiwi/Aussie Noses

While New Zealand Australian taxpayers support the East Timorese mini-state and ANZAC troops risk there lives to maintain peace, Cuba is busily indoctrinating the populace.

Cuban literacy programs are used throughout the third world and even in New Zealand and the US.

They are more than "literacy" programs-they are in reality socialist indoctrination schemes.

Now they are being used to to return East Timor to what it was pre 1975-a socialist mini Cuba on our back doorstep.

From the Australian Marxist-Leninist journal LINKS.

In Timor Leste [East Timor], which is one of the world’s newest countries and Australia’s poorest Asia-Pacific neighbour, Cuba is delivering an educational aid program which aims to eradicate illiteracy, currently affecting nearly 50% of the adult population, within a period of less than 10 years. The Timor Leste national literacy campaign, utilising the Cuban-developed Yo! Si Puedo (Yes! I can) audiovisual teaching method, opened its first classes in the capital Dili in June 2007.

Eighteen months later, by December 2008, nearly 18,000 adults had completed a course of 65 lessons, led by local village monitors who work under the close supervision of 36 Cuban education advisers deployed throughout the country. If it continues at this rate, the literacy campaign can be expected to have a major impact on the stabilisation and development of Timor Leste, providing a model for other Pacific countries struggling to overcome their educational disadvantage.

Why are the Australian and New Zealand taxpayers supporting a country that allows this program to continue?

The Chinese Road to Socialism

I try to hammer the point that though China has adopted some aspects of capitalism to build her economic might, that does not mean that Beijing has abandoned Marxism-Leninism.

From Lenin's New Economic Policy in the 1920s, to today's reforms in China, Vietnam and Russia, the communists have happily used capitalistic methods when economocally necessary or strategically advantageous.

Communists have always acknowledged capitalism's productive power and are willing to use it along the way to the final triumph of socialism.

From the Cuba News Agency via the Communist Party USA's Political Affairs

Since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China sixty years ago, on October 1st, 1949, the economy of this nation, under the direction Chinese Communist Party, has become a model of prosperity.

This Asian country has turned into a key driving force for the planet’s economic development. For example, from 1979 to 2007, it registered an annual economic growth of 9.8 percent, which is 6.8 percent higher than the world average; and its contribution to the global economy increased from 2.3 percent in 1978 to 14.5 percent in 2006, only behind the United States.

Thanks to its enormous development, China plays an important role in the main international markets and its influence increases by the day. For many experts, its economic success is almost a miracle in Asia and the world.

In this regard, during an exclusive interview with the Cuban News Agency, the Chinese Ambassador to Havana, Zhao Rongxian, said, “The Chinese people have chosen the path of Socialism because we believe that it is the most convenient and advisable one as it responds to the needs of the historical process of China. Only Socialism can save and promote its development. Our goal is to build a prosperous, civilized, democratic and harmonious country.”

During the past sixty years, what used to be a poor and backward nation has become a prosperous and powerful country, respected by the main western capitalist powers.

Ambassador Rongxian explained that after the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, during the 1949-1980 period, they went from a planned economy to a process of opening-up and reform that allowed them to establish a so-called market socialist economy.

We believe that this system can revitalize and bring new dynamics to the economy and the social and economic development of the country,” he stressed.

After recalling the existence of active foreign forces against a prosperous and powerful China, the diplomat added that the strategic program designed in the early 1980s until the year 2050 aims at transforming the highly populated socialist State into a country of middle development.

Rongxian stated that during the first half of the year, they reached an economic growth of 7.1 percent and they are convinced that they will finish 2009 with an annual growth of 8 percent.

Of course, we remain loyal to the principles of Marxism-Leninism, the socialist system and the leadership of the Communist Party with the people at the center of our attention.

Another Day, Another Democrat Corruption Scandal

From ACORN to Wall Street, the US Democratic Party runs on corruption and laundered money.

From Reuters

Hassan Nemazee, a fund-raiser for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, has been indicted for defrauding Bank of America, HSBC and Citigroup Inc out of more than $290 million in loan proceeds, U.S. prosecutors said on Monday.

The announcement follows last month's indictment of Nemazee, head of a private equity firm and an Iranian American Political Action Committee board member, on one count of defrauding Citigroup's Citibank.

The new indictment adds allegations that he defrauded two other banks, Bank of America and HSBC Bank USA, in a similar fashion by falsifying documents and signatures to purportedly show he had hundreds of millions worth of collateral.

The office of the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan and the FBI said he used the proceeds of his scheme to make donations to election campaigns of federal, state and local candidates, donations to political action committees and charities...

As of August 2009 Nemazee owed Bank of America about $142 million and owed Citibank about $74.9 million, the indictment said. He drew on a line of credit he fraudulently obtained from HSBC to pay the Citibank loan.

Nemazee, 59, typically donates more than $100,000 annually to Democratic political candidates. He is listed as one of the top "bundlers" of contributions to Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, according to OpenSecrets.org, a website run by the Center for Responsive Politics research group.

In 2004, Nemazee was a major financial supporter of John Kerry and was later the national finance chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

With Nemazee as the national finance chair, New York Senator's Chuck Schumer's Democratic Senate Campaign Committee in 2006 raised $115 million, significantly helping the Democrats to take control of the Senate

Nemazee served as Finance Chairman to Hillary Clinton's 2007-08 presidential campaign and he also donated the maximum $50,000 (the maximum amount) to Barack Obama's Presidential Inaugural Committee

Did Ayers Write Obama's Book?

US researcher Jack Cashill has been diligently trying to prove that Barack Obama's autobiography "Dreams From My Father" was ghost written by Bill Ayers.

You know, the former Weather Underground terrorist leader, that Obama called "just a guy from my neighborhood".

Now Cashill has some pretty strong evidence contradicting Obama's story-and that Ayers helped write obama's book.

Jack Cashill at American Thinker

In his new book, "Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage," Best-selling celebrity journalist, Christopher Andersen, has blown a huge hole in the Obama genius myth without intending to do so.

Relying on inside sources, quite possibly Michelle Obama herself, Andersen describes how Dreams came to be published -- just as I had envisioned it in my articles on the authorship of Dreams. With the deadline pressing, Michelle recommended that Barack seek advice from "his friend and Hyde Park neighbor Bill Ayers."

To flesh out his family history, Obama had taped interviews with various family members. Andersen writes, "These oral histories, along with a partial manuscript and a truckload of notes, were given to Ayers." Andersen quotes a Hyde Park neighbor, "Everyone knew they were friends and that they worked on various projects together. It was no secret. Why would it be? People liked them both."

Andersen continues, "In the end, Ayers's contribution to Barack's Dreams From My Father would be significant--so much so that the book's language, oddly specific references, literary devices, and themes would bear a jarring similarity to Ayers's own writing."

More to come!

Obama File 87 Obama's Socialist Appointees-Where is the Spotlight?

Obama File 86 here

I have written here, here, here , here, here, here, here, here, here ,here, here, here, here , here, here, here, here, here, and here about Barack Obama's long term association with Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

So what you say-they're "democratic" aren't they? they're only "socialists, not communists or militant radicals?

Some facts:

Quentin Young, Barack Obama, circa 2002

President Obama has close personal and political ties to several DSA members including Quentin Young, Timuel Black, the late Rabbi Arnold Jacob Wolf, the late Saul Mendelson, Lou Pardo, Congressman Danny Davis and DSA honorees Jackie Grimshaw, Jackie Kendall and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

DSA's several thousand strong membership has grown incresingly militant over the years until the point its policies are almost indistinguishable from those of the Communist Party USA.

In an article in DSA's Democratic Left, Spring 2007, DSA National Political Committee member David Green wrote;

Our goal as socialists is to abolish private ownership of the means of production. Our immediate task is to limit the capitalist class’s prerogatives in the workplace...

In the short run we must at least minimize the degree of exploitation of workers by capitalists. We can accomplish this by promoting full employment policies, passing local living wage laws, but most of all by increasing the union movement’s power...

DSA has some cross membership with the Communist Party and considerable cross-membership with the the equally militant Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism.

DSA has close ties to many Congressman, including John Conyers, Danny Davis, Jan Schakowsky (all close Obama supporters) Jerrold Nadler and Bob Filner.

DSA has key personnel or allies at the top of AFL-CIO, SEIU, United Auto Workers, United Steelworkers of America and other major unions.

DSA has considerable influence in ACORN, Working Families Party, Green Party, Democratic Party, USAction, Jobs with Justice, Economic Policy Imstitute, Campaign for America's Future, Demos (which Obama helped found), Black Radical Congress and many other mass organisations, including some churches.

DSA is affiliated to the Socialist International which now includes several "former" communist parties-Mongolia, Mozambique, Bulgaria, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Estonia, Angola, Hungary and Poland, as well as the Nicaraguan Sandinistas and the still-existing Communist Parties of Laos, Cuba and China ("observer" only).

Former DSA National Political Committee member Kurt Stand is currently serving a 17 year jail sentence for spying for the former East Germany and offering to spy for the South African Communist Party. His wife and co-conspirator Theresa Squillacote, a former Pentagon lawyer and a Committees of Correspondence member is serving 22 years.

Several DSA members have long term ties to the Washington based Institute for Policy Studies, which was linked, some years back to Soviet and Cuban intelligence offers and many third world revolutionary movements.

In 2006/7 several DSA leaders, including Paul Buhle, Barbara Ehrenreich and Bill Fletcher Jr held leadership roles in Movement for a Democratic Society-with leaders of the Communist Party USA, the Committees of Correspondence and four former key leaders of the terrorist Weather Underground, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeff Jones and Mark Rudd.

Ehrenreich and Fletcher Jr, together with another two MDS leaders, Carl Davidson of Committees of Correspondence and Tom Hayden, went on to form Progressives for Obama.

Still think DSA is harmless, insignificant?

Next I list seven menbers of the Obama administration who have had some ties to DSA/Socialist international- ranging from paid up DSA membership, to signing a DSA petiton, to addressing one DSA sponsored event, to being related to a DSA member.

Some may be entirely innocent, but some may not.

Do any, or all warrant further investigation?

You judge.

Ron Bloom Manufacturing Czar.

Ron Bloom, a socialist since his teens, has worked for several DSA linked organizations including SEIU, Jewish Labor Committee and United Steelworkers of America.

Bloom wrote in an article for the Fall 2006 edition of DSA's Democratic Left;

In today’s world the blather about free trade, free-markets and the joys of competition is nothing but pablum for the suckers.

David Bonior Member of the Obama Economic Transition Team-now delegated by president Obama to negotiate the unification of the AFL-CIO and Change to Win labor federations.

Former Democratic speaker of the house David Bonior, has been linked to DSA for many years and had formally joined the organization by 2006.

David Bonior, Detroit DSA chair David Green, Douglass-Debs Dinner November 8th 2008

Detroit DSA celebrated the 10th Annual Douglass-Debs Dinner November 8th 2008 Co-chairs were United Auto Workers official Rory Gamble and International Union of Operating Engineers Business Manager Phillip Schloop. The Douglass-Debs Award winners were David and Judy Bonior...

David Bonior served in Congress for 26 years rising through the leadership to become the Democratic Caucus Whip. During his tenure in Congress, Bonior fought to raise the minimum wage, protect pensions, support unions, and extend unemployment benefits. He led the fight to oppose NAFTA in 1993.

He worked to prevent war in Central America in the 1980s and again to prevent the Iraq War in 2002. After leaving Congress, Bonior co-founded American Rights at Work, a labor advocacy and research organization, which has made passage of the Employee Free Choice Act its major legislative priority. Bonior was recently appointed to the Obama economic team.

In his remarks at the dinner, David Bonior stressed the importance of building social movements...to pressure the new Obama administration for bold progressive changes such as single-payer national health insurance, significant public investment in infrastructure and green technology, fair trade, progressive taxation, massive cuts in the military budget, ending the war in Iraq, and passing the Employee Free Choice Act.

Rosa Brooks Senior advisor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Michele Flournoy.

Reportedly named after communist radical Rosa Luxemburg, Brooks is the daughter of prominent DSA member, Movement for a Democratic Society board member and Progressives for Obama founder, Barbara Ehrenreich.

Rosa Brooks is a well known "liberal" newspaper columnist and writer on defense and international relations.

Brooks has served as Special Counsel to the President at George Soros' Open Society Institute.

Carol Browner Energy Czar/Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy.

Until summer 2008 Carol Browner was a member of Socialist International Commission for a Sustainable World Society.

Carol Browner addressing SI 13th Congress, Athens, Greece June 30th 2008 -Acting Now on Climate Change

The other US delegates to the Athens conference above were DSA leaders Frank Llewellyn, Corey Walker, George Roberts, David Duhalde, Alejandro Duhalde and Andrew Hammer.

In the 1970s Carol Browner worked for Citizen's Action, which was founded by former Students for a Democratic Society radicals, Steve Max and Heather Booth, both later affiliated to DSA.

Browner is also a financial supporter of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, a socialist, openly aligned with DSA.

Heather Higginbottom Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, formerly with the Obama for America campaign

From 1999 to 2007, Higginbottom served as legislative director for Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts-who has a relationship to Boston DSA.

On October 30, 2001, while working for Senator Kerry, Heather Higginbottom addressed a Boston DSA organized forum "Welfare, Children and Families: The Impact of Welfare Reform".

Heather Higginbottom, William Julius Wilson, Dottie Stevens, Jack Clark and Robert J Haynes

Of those listed above Jack Clark was Boston DSA Chair , William Julius Wilson is a long time DSA affiliate and in 1996 addressed a DSA forum in Chicago with Barack Obama.

Robert Haynes is President of the Massachisetts AFL-CIO, with whom DSA works "frequently".

Samantha Power National Security Council, as director for multilateral affairs.

After the 2008 presidential election, Power was a member of Obama's Transition Team, working for the Department of State.

In April 2003 Samantha Power signed her name to an open letter, initiated by prominent DSA member Leo Casey , calling for normalization of relations with Cuba.

The letter is in line with DSA and Communist Party aims to remove the trade embargo on Cuba. DSA uses the subtle approach of claiming that sanctions are actually encouraging Cuba to violate human rights, so that easing restrictions would make Cuban authorities more tolerant of dissent.

Democratic Left Against Cuban Repression

Below is a statement circulating among democratic left/socialist folks, largely by members of Democratic Socialists of America, condemning the recent trials and convictions of non-violent dissenters in Cuba.

The petition sharply criticized Cuba's poor human rights record, but shared the blame for Cuba's failures with "reactionary elements of the US administration..."

The democratic left worldwide has opposed the US embargo on Cuba as counterproductive, more harmful to the interests of the Cuban people than helpful to political democratization. The Cuban state's current repression of political dissidents amounts to collaboration with the most reactionary elements of the US administration in their efforts to maintain sanctions and to institute even more punitive measures against Cuba.

Many of the petition's 120 odd signatories were known members of DSA-including Theresa Alt, Dave Anderson, Stanley Aronowitz, Leo Casey, Bogdan Denitch, Bill Dixon, Nancy Fraser, Andrew Hammer, Richard Healey, Michael Hirsch, James Hughes, Maurice Isserman, Mark Levinson, Maxine Phillips, Michael Pugliese, Michele Rossi, Joseph Schwartz, Jason Schulman, Timothy Sears and Ian Williams.

Samantha Power is married to Obama regulatory "Czar" Cass Sunstein.

Hilda Solis Secretary of Labor.

Before being appointed to her new role, Solis served on the board of American Rights at Work with several DSA supporters including David Bonior, then AFL-CIO president John Sweeney, labor economist Harley Shaiken and NAACP leader Julian Bond.

Hilda Solis was a keynote speaker at the DSA national conference "21st Century Socialism" in Los Angeles in November 2005.

Saturday evening delegates recognized the contributions of DSA vice chair and Washington Post columnist Harold Meyerson, Occidental College sociologist and longtime DSAer Peter Dreier and insurgent California Congress member Hilda Solis who in turn provided in-depth perspectives of the political scene.

In June 2008, the Socialist International Migrations Committee held a Migrations Reform, Integration, Rights forum in Los Angeles.

DSA was represented by National Director Frank Llewellyn plus Duane Campbell and Dolores Delgado Campbell of DSA's Anti Racism and Latino networks.

Hilda Solis was formally represented by Elena Henry, a caseworker from Solis' East Los Angeles Office.

In 2008 Hilda Solis served on Barack Obama's National Latino Advisory Council alongside DSA honorary chair and SEIU vice president Eliseo Medina.

The seven officials profiled above include some of the most powerful and influential people in America today.

Several have the power to profoundly influence the future prosperity and security of the world's most powerful nation. Some have access to highly secret information.

The MSM practically went through Sarah Palin's underwear drawers when she sought the US vice Presidency. Why does the media not give Obama appointees, even a cursory level of scrutiny?

After the Van Jones fiasco, public faith in the Obama Administration's much vaunted vetting procedures are rock bottom.

Should the spotlight now shine on President Obama's socialist affiliated appointees?

If not, why not?

Why Horowitz is "Thrilled"

David Horowitz on the growing American patriotic insurgency.

Personally, I am thrilled with what is happening now in the conservative movement – our aggressive media like Fox and talk radio, the emergence of enraged conservative masses – the tea baggers – as leftist half-wits like to dismiss them. It is this energized, unapologetic, in-your-face (but also civilized and intelligent) conservative base on whom the future not only of the movement but the country depends.

I'm thrilled too, because the future of the Western Civilization depends on it.

That includes New Zealand of course.

Warning to America and What's Left of the West

As the Obama administration cuddles up to Moscow and Caracas, America's enemies in the those cities plot the destruction of the West.

Economic decline is the least of the West's worries.

Neo-Marxist world domination is the real name of the game.

Read this excellent and completely accurate article from Toby Westerman

Venezuela’s Marxist president-dictator Hugo Chavez addressed an influential university in Moscow stating that America’s influence in the world is “dying,” and will be replaced in “the next decades” by a “multi-polar” world in which Russia plays a leading role.

Chavez wants to “accelerate” the process, a sentiment which receives support from the Moscow elite.

During his Sept. 9-10 2009 visit,Chavez received an enthusiastic reception from about 1,000 students at Moscow’s Patrice Lumumba Peoples Friendship University, an institution founded in 1960 as a KGB training ground for communist revolutionaries and pro-Soviet activists. The university’s namesake was a prime minister of the Republic of the Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) who attempted to bring his nation into an alliance with the Soviet Union. Lumumba was executed by anti-communist forces.

Today’s students at Lumumba U. appeared to continue the school’s Marxist traditions as they gave their approval to Chavez’s two-plus hour denunciation of the United States as a center of terrorism, while praising Bolshevik revolutionary leader and mass murderer, Vladimir Lenin, and Fidel Castro, the founder of the Cuban gulag.

Chavez’s university speech was in stark contrast to his previous visits which tended to be low-key in tone and reduced the public exposure of the Venezuelan dictator’s fiery rhetoric.

The growing authoritarianism in Russia and Moscow’s increasing militarism receives Chavez support. The burgeoning power of Russia will be an important element in the new world which Chavez believes is being born, as the power and influence of the United States ends.

In a statement directed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chavez said that at their initial meeting in 2001, “we were in the old world” – when the U.S. was strong, in contrast to the present situation, in which “another world has arose” as the U.S. declines. Chavez demonstrated his commitment to world revolution as he declared to Putin, ” we need to accelerate this step.”

Both Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev received praise from Chavez for “getting Russia off its knees,” and establishing Russia as a “superpower” again.

Chavez is putting his revolutionary words into practice.

Among the agreements reached between the Chavez regime and Russia was military-technology pact. The specific provisions are not known, but advanced tanks, missiles, possibly submarines, are reported to included. Russia is providing two plus billion dollars in credits to assist Chavez in his arms acquisition.

In addition to conventional weapons, Russia has expressed its willingness to assist Chavez in his nuclear ambitions. Chavez is in contact with the Islamic Republic of Iran seeking nuclear technology, which has its origins in Russia, and build what he calls a “nuclear city.”

The kind of world Chavez and the Russian elite are planning for humanity is seen in the revolutionary tradition mentioned in the address to Lumumba U. Putin embodies that tradition.

Putin is an “ex”-KGB spymaster who sees himself as a “Chekist,” part of the tradition of spies and secrete police personnel which extends back to Lenin’s protégée in murder, Felix Dzerzhinsky, who started the Bolshevik internal spy service, originally known as the “Cheka.”

The term comes from the Russian abbreviation for the Bolshevik secret police organization, the “All-Russia Extraordinary Commission to Combat Counter-revolution and Sabotage.”

At Lenin’s direction, the director of the Cheka, Felix Dzerzhinsky, set a bloody precedent for communist oppression by killing millions and imprisoning millions more. Stalin would merely accelerate the mayhem.

The midnight visit by the secret police, censorship, fraudulent “elections,” and the control of all possible sources of opposition are all necessary elements in any Marxist revolutionary society – from Lenin to Chavez.

This is the governmental system which Chavez wants to see dominant, and this is the system that Moscow and Chavez are fostering in Latin America.

Our leaders must understand that we are the targets of a neo-communist offensive. Chavez and company are not hiding what they are doing, we are merely ignoring this threat – to our peril and that of our children, and their children.

Thanks to Robin.

Obama File 86 Obama "Czar" Ron Bloom's Socialist Vision for US Industry

Obama file 85 here

Ron Bloom was named the Manufacturing Czar for the United States by President Barack Obama on September 8, 2009-two days after communist "Green Jobs Czar" Van Jones resigned under pressure.

To understand Ron Bloom's assigned role, it helps to know the environment he comes from.

The Obama administration has emphasised Bloom's investment banking and business background.

But Bloom has spent far longer in the labor and socialist movements than he has on Wall Street. There is even some evidence that Bloom specifically went into banking, in order to better serve organized labor.

Like Obama himself, Bloom has moved in circles close to Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)-an organization far more "socialist" than "democratic".

To illustrate DSA's radicalism I cite their journal Democratic Left, Spring 2007. The article by Detroit DSA chair and National Political Committee member David Green supports the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)-or "card check".

What distinguishes socialists from other progressives is the theory of surplus value. According to Marx, the secret of surplus value is that workers are a source of more value than they receive in wages. The capitalist is able to capture surplus value through his ownership of the means of production, his right to purchase labor as a commodity, his control over the production process, and his ownership of the final product. Surplus value is the measure of capital’s exploitation of labor

The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) provides an excellent organizing tool through which we can pursue our socialist strategy while simultaneously engaging the broader electorate on an issue of economic populism.

Green explained how DSA could play a role in getting the Act passed through the Senate after the 2008 elections.

The fact that we face an uphill battle in the Senate does not detract from the value of DSA doing organizing work around EFCA. At a minimum, we can force conservative senators to place themselves on record as opposed to EFCA. This would then make these incumbents even more vulnerable in the 2008 elections. If we replace only a few of these anti-labor senators in 2008, we should be able to pass EFCA in the next Congress.

DSA could play a role in organizing support for EFCA. We have locals and activists across the country capable of organizing successful public events – as demonstrated by our Sanders house parties. We have “notables” capable of attracting non-DSA members to public events. We have academics, writers and speakers capable of elucidating public policy issues in clear and simple language. We have a solid relationship with several major unions-UAW, USW, IAM.

Green went on to explain how DSA's EFCA campaign could work-DSA could organize public meetings in coalition with other groups, including the AFL-CIO’s Voice at Work Department, state AFL-CIOs and central labor councils, American Rights at Work, America Votes, Progressive Democrats of America, Committees of Correspondence, ACORN and state Democratic parties.

Green also listed individuals who could be invited to speak in support including John Edwards, John Sweeney , Cornel West, Barbara Ehrenreich, Leo Gerard, Ron Gettlefinger, David Bonior and openly socialist Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Note that Green emphasises DSA's ties to USW-United Steel Workers of America- also that the list of speakers included four DSA members AFL-CIO president John Sweeney , Cornel West, Barbara Ehrenreich and David Bonior, plus Steel Workers Union President Leo Gerard.

Interestingly it was Leo Gerard who recruited Ron Bloom into the USW in 1996.

"I said, why don't you come work at what you really believe in?...He could play a lead role in bargaining, play a role in a number of different sectors in the economy and shape policy."

Bloom initially served as an adviser to then union president George Becker, then to Leo Gerard when he assumed leadership in 2001.

George Becker was close to DSA-serving on the board of the Economic Policy Instiute under DSA member Larry Mishel.

In 1996 Becker also helped found campaign for America's Future-with DSA linked activists John Atlas, Barry Bluestone, Julian Bond, Richard Cloward, Peter Dreier, Barbara Ehrenreich, Jackie Kendall, Nelson Lichtenstein, Steve Max, Jay Mazur, Gerald McEntee, Harold Meyerson, Larry Mishel, Frances Fox Piven, Joel Rogers, Richard Rorty and John Sweeney.

In 1997, George Becker was honored by Chicago Democratic Socialists of America at their annual Debs - Thomas - Harrington Dinner-the first Steelworker to be an honoree at the event.

George Becker spoke with pride about his birthplace, Granite City, Illinois. In the 1920s, they had a Socialist Mayor and a Socialist Council and Eugene Debs was an honored speaker at many events. He also spoke of a relative of his wife, in Missouri, who ran for office as a Socialist when Norman Thomas ran for President."

Leo Gerard, Ron Bloom's most recent boss, is also well within the DSA "orbit".

Gerard serves on the board of the DSA led Economic Policy Institute and on the advisory board of Wellstone Action with Julian Bond, Gerald McEntee and Frances Fox Piven. Wellstone Action is named after late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, once faculty adviser to a DSA student group.

Leo Gerard also serves on the board of the Apollo Alliance with Joel Rogers and SEIU vice president and DSA member Gerry Hudson. It is unclear if Gerard has ever worked with Apollo founder Van Jones, or New York director, former Weather Underground terrorist leader Jeff Jones.

When Gerard became president of the United Steel Workers in 2001, Bob Roman of Chicago DSA wrote;

The USWA has a long tradition of militant, good mostly leadership. Now they have someone both militant and radical, which is not surprising as Girard is a Canadian export with ties to the Canadian New Democratic Party.

The New Democratic Party is the Canadian counterpart of Democratic Socialists of America-both organizations are Socialist International affiliates.

In May 2007 Chicago DSA honored Leo Gerard with its annual Debs - Thomas - Harrington award- the second Steelworker to be an honoree at the event.

For your lifetime of service to your union and its members;

For your leadership in building working class solidarity across borders;

For your advocacy of fair trade over free trade;

For your work in seeking public policies that support a healthy environment and energy independence;

For your commitment to finding a better way to run the economy for working people everywhere;

The Debs - Thomas - Harrington Dinner Committee does hereby present you with its annual award this 4th day of May, 2007.

Ron Bloom's background is similarly socialist.

Much of Bloom’s childhood revolved around Habonim "a progressive Labor Zionist youth movement that emphasizes cultural Judaism, socialism and social justice."

At age 10, Bloom was sent with his two siblings to Camp Galil, a movement-run summer camp in Pennsylvania. He returned each season for the next four years-eventually becoming a camp counselor.

Bloom recently said of his Habonim experience;

“That’s part of what I try to do in my work life...That’s one of the things that made me want to work for Obama.”

After graduating from Wesleyan University in 1977, Bloom worked as an organizer and research and negotiating specialist for the SEIU-working for a time under John Sweeney.

He later worked as executive director of the Massachusetts Coalition for Full Employment and as New England Regional Director of the Jewish Labor Committee.

Incidentally the contact for the Detroit Jewish Labor Committee, Selma Goode, works closely in Greater Detroit DSA, with David Green, author of the Democratic Left tract which opened this post.

While at SEIU, Ron Bloom came to the conclusion that unions lacked the technical skills to negotiate with management teams and their advisers at the bargaining table.

"Unions were being backed into corners by companies and couldn't understand on a sophisticated level, the company's arguments...Labor needed to be armed with the equivalent skills."

Bloom's next mission was to learn the ways of Wall Street.

Bloom went to Harvard Business School, then became an investment banker with Lazard Freres, in New York.

According to future business partner Gene Keilin.

"He recruited himself to Lazard...Unlike most young bankers, he was fully formed by the time he got here. He worked really hard. He came as a very strong technical analyst. He understood valuation and financial instruments. The fact is he was a 24x7guy long before that term was ever coined."

After a period in partnership with Keilin, Bloom took a pay cut in 1996 to join the Steel Workers Union as a Special Assistant to the President and later head of the Union’s Corporate Research, Industry Analysis and Pattern Bargaining Departments.

That Wall st did not dampen Bloom's socialist zeal is evident in an article he contributed to the Fall 2006 edition of DSA's Democratic Left.

Based on a remarks delivered to the metal industry’s Steel Success Strategies XXI conference in New York in June 2006, Bloom revealed a strong antipathy towards America's traditional competitive free enterprise system.

The Steelworkers have some advice for industry execs on how to make sure there’s plenty for both shareholders and workers. The theme of this advice will be really quite simple – be hard-headed and pragmatic capitalists – run the companies and actively participate in the political process on the basis of what is good for your shareholders – and not based on outmoded nostrums about unions, free enterprise, deregulation, free markets and free trade.

In today’s world the blather about free trade, free-markets and the joys of competition is nothing but pablum for the suckers. The guys making the real money know that outsized returns are available to those who find the industries that get the system to work for them and the companies within those industries that dominate them.

Unsurprisingly Bloom promoted the virtues of business/union "partnership";

The starting point is that companies need to get along with the union. Companies that establish a constructive partnership with their unions do far better for their shareholders than those that do not.

Socialized health care:

Health Care Costs-The first is one where conflicts between labor and management do still exist, and that is health care. On that issue, however, given the fact that the shareholders want us to get along, the answer is to get it out of collective bargaining and into the public sphere. That means that management must support universal single-payer national health care...

Industry "protection";

Historically, the industry has focused on the threat from unfairly traded imported steel. And while that threat is real and should continue to be monitored, today the more immediate threat comes from the demand for steel being lost because those who use the steel will use it somewhere else...

The steel industry, in its own self-interest, needs to broadly engage in the fight to save the overall manufacturing sector. Every other nation in the world has a specific and targeted strategy to preserve or expand its manufacturing base...

The growth of China and India can be a great opportunity. But not if we, as Lenin so aptly put it, sell them the rope with which to hang us.

Steel industry managers need to repudiate the race-to-the bottom model of globalization. We need world trade that brings the bottom up, not the top down, and we need to tell the American government to do what every one of its trading partners does – stand up for those who operate on their soil.

State control of energy;

The steel industry and manufacturers in general need to stop worrying about offending their business school classmates, political soul mates, and friends at the country club and to stand up for their owners. It is time to support a comprehensive national energy program...

As Manufacturing Czar Ron Bloom will almost certainly push for a more centralized, unionized, government dependent manufacturing base-exactly what Democratic socialists of America are calling for.

He will almost certainly try to sell big business on socialized health care to make business more competitive. He will drive the labor union agenda from on high.

Bloom will almost certainly work closely in this with Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, who also has DSA connections.

David Bonior with Detroit DSA chair David Green, 2008

The pair will also be aided by John Bonior-a paid up Detroit DSA member (and colleague of David Green) who President Obama has delegated to re-unite the US's two major labor federations AFL-CIO and Change to Win, under one banner.

Three of the most influential union affiliated officials of the Obama administration have connections to Democratic Socialists of America-an organization whose "goal as socialists is to abolish private ownership of the means of production".

This doesn't appear to worry the Obama administration-which is well known for its vigorous vetting procedures.

Perhaps it concerns you a little?

Scammers Scammed-Latest ACORN Tape

Two US journalism students, James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles, have been walking into offices of the radical "community organization" ACORN across the US-posing as prostitute and pimp.

With a hidden camera rolling they ask ACORN staff for legal advice on setting up a brothel, importing under-age girls, evading tax and laundering profits into the "pimp's" political career.

They were thrown out of some offices, but recieved a very sympathetic hearing in others.

Tapes of these encounters have been released by Glenn Beck and others, creating a major scandal-several ACORN staffers have been sacked but the tapes keep on a coming.

Here's there latest made at the ACORN San Bernardino office. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so serious.

2 Million March on Washington

The positive side of the Obama Presidency is that millions of Americans have re-discovered what it means to be American.

Millions have re-discovered the US constitution and the principles that made American freedom an example to the world.

Two million of them marched on Washington yesterday to show the administration where Real America stands.

The New American Reality

This essay from Eowyn at Giovanni's World succintly sums up the new American reality

No Longer One Nation, Under God

During the ‘08 campaign, an essay written by Dennis Prager made a deep impression on me because it said out loud what increasingly was in my mind and heart: The Left and Right in America have become irreconcilable.

As Prager wrote then:

It is time to confront the unhappy fact about our country: There are now two Americas….

For most of my life I have believed, in what I now regard as wishful thinking, that the right and left wings have essentially the same vision for America, that it’s only about ways to get there in which the two sides differ. Right and left share the same ends, I thought.

That is not the case. For the most part, right and left differ in their visions of America and that is why they differ on policies.

Right and the left do not want the same America.

The latest pundit to say the same thing is Patrick Buchanan:

We seem not only to disagree with each other more than ever, but to have come almost to detest one another. Politically, culturally, racially, we seem ever ready to go for each others’ throats….

The question invites itself. In what sense are we one nation and one people anymore? For what is a nation if not a people of a common ancestry, faith, culture and language, who worship the same God, revere the same heroes, cherish the same history, celebrate the same holidays and share the same music, poetry, art and literature?

…Christmas and Easter, the great holidays of Christendom, once united Americans in joy. Now we fight over whether they should even be mentioned, let alone celebrated, in our public schools.

…One part of America loves her history, another reviles it as racist, imperialist and genocidal…. But the old holidays, heroes and icons endure, as the new have yet to put down roots in a recalcitrant Middle America.

We are not only more divided than ever on politics, faith and morality, but along the lines of class and ethnicity. Those who opposed Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court and stood by Sgt. Crowley in the face-off with Harvard’s Henry Louis Gates were called racists. But this time they did not back down. They threw the same vile word right back in the face of their accusers, and Barack Obama.

Consider but a few issues on which Americans have lately been bitterly divided: school prayer, the Ten Commandments, evolution, the death penalty, abortion, homosexuality, assisted suicide, affirmative action, busing, the Confederate battle flag, the Duke rape case, Terri Schiavo, Iraq, amnesty, torture.

Now it is death panels, global warming, “birthers” and socialism. If a married couple disagreed as broadly and deeply as Americans do on such basic issues, they would have divorced and gone their separate ways long ago. What is it that still holds us together?

I believe that there is a fundamental and irreconcilable difference between conservatives and liberals.

Conservatives truly believe that in 1776 something remarkable happened — the founding of the United States of America. The American republic, though far from perfect — given the shameful treatment of the indigenous “Indians” and black slaves — nevertheless was something special in human history. Conservatives therefore revere the Constitution and the Founding Fathers. We also believe that it is only because of American ideals as embodied in the Constitution that later reforms — emancipation of slaves and women, the civil rights movement — were even possible.

But conservatives are like the Ents in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Revering what the Founding Fathers instituted, conservatives are by our nature not revolutionaries. And so, we became complacent -- while the Left infiltrated and took over every institution in American society.

Liberals, however, especially the far Left, fixate on America’s imperfections, past and present, and in so doing create and embrace Identity Politics with its narcissistic permanent sense of aggrieved victimhood.

More importantly, instead of faulting flawed men who did not live up to the Declaration of Independence’s promise that all human beings “are created equal,” the Left blame “The System” — the very essence and institutions of the American republic for our problems and imperfections. They do not think something very special happened in 1776. They do not revere the Constitution or the Founding Fathers and, worshiping at the altar of radical feminism, insist that the latter be referred to as gender-neutral emasculated “Founders.”

The Left mean to destroy and transform America.

What to do then?

I don’t believe it is productive to lament this reality. Better that we be clear-eyed, for we can’t fix something if we can’t even name what’s wrong.

And the last thing conservatives should do is play nice because the Left don’t. Being the revolutionaries they are, they actually had known our differences are irreconcilable long before we did.

What we must do is:

Stand firm on our beliefs, ideals, and principles.
Inform and educate the American people.
Take back our schools, colleges, universities, and pop culture.
And fight, fight, fight to win elections at the national, state, and local levels, so that the Left, who are a numerical minority in the population, never again seize political power.

The Ents were slow to anger and to action. But when they finally realized that the very continuation of Middle-Earth was in peril, led by the great Treebeard, the Ents went to war.

We have numbers on our side because recent survey data say conservatives are an ideological majority, at 40%. We simply need to be energized and mobilized to action — which we are.

Our labor will be hard and unrelenting and unending. To do otherwise is to consign the American Republic to the trash-heap of history.

Obama File 85 Security Implications? Obama's Man Axelrod Was Mentored by Marxist Radicals

Obama File 84 here

Few would dispute that Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod are two of President Barack Obama's key advisors.

I wrote here that Valerie Jarrett's father-in-law Vernon Jarrett, worked with Communist Party member Frank Marshall Davis, in at least three communist dominated organizations in late 1940s Chicago.

Davis then went on to eventually mentor the young Barack Obama in Hawaii.

David Axelrod too has connections that that stretch back to post War Chicago communism.

While a New Yorker by birth, David Axelrod studied political science at the University of Chicago in the early 1970s. Later, while a start-out journalist with the Hyde-Park Herald, Axelrod was mentored by two older journalists cum political activists, Don Rose and David S Canter.

According to the Chicago Tribune

In his early years as a political consultant, Axelrod, following in the footsteps of his mentor, the political strategist Don Rose, carved out a reputation for himself as a skillful specialist working for local progressive candidates...says Rose. "I think he's a principled, generally progressive guy... ."

From 1966 until 1975 Don Rose and his partner David S Canter co-owned a small newspaper called the Hyde Park Kenwood Voices. The paper's radical tone suited the neighbourhood. It tended to follow the Communist Party line-campaigning for example to abolish the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

The paper sympathetically covered the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) riots at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Party convention and the SDS convention that gave birth to the Weather Underground.

It gave a voice to prominent figures of the Hyde Park left. These included several future Obama mentors such Abner Mikva, Leon Despres, Timuel Black and Quentin Young.

Chicago SDS activists Paul Booth and Rennie Davis were "Voices" contributors-Davis wrote a November 1967 article about his visit to communist North Vietnam with future Progressives for Obama founder Tom Hayden.

The paper covered Quentin Young's 1972 trip to North Vietnam and his son Ethan's, 1970 sojourn in Cuba with the Venceremos Brigades.

"Essentially what I see myself working for is socialism in the United States..."said Ethan. "Exactly how it will emerge, I'm still not sure...but that's what I'll be working for".

Don Rose and David Canter took the young David Axelrod under their wing. Axelrod was a regular visitor to the Canter household and the radical duo took it upon themselves to "mentor" and "educate...politically", a the young journalist.

Don Rose later wrote a reference letter for Axelrod that helped win the internship at the Chicago Tribune which launched his career.

At the time Rose was active in a Communist Party front, the Alliance to End Repression.

The Alliance was set up to abolish the Chicago "Red Squad", the police unit charged with monitoring communist and radical organisations.

Rose's personal Red Squad file accused him of being a "member of the anarchists".

The Alliance's executive director was Communist Party member Richard Criley. Other Party members involved in the organization included Abe Feinglass, Jack Spiegel, Jesse Prosten and Norman Roth.

Also active in the Alliance was former Communist Party member Milton Cohen , Quentin Young, Timuel Black and Rabbi Arnold Wolf. All four went on to join Democratic Socialists of America, while Young, Black and Wolf all became close personal friends of Barack Obama.

Don Rose also chaired another Communist Party front, the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights, succeeding comrade Richard Criley.

Rose had been radical since the 1940s when he joined Henry Wallaces's communist controlled Progressive Party.

In the '50s Rose was involved in the campaign for nuclear disarmament and in the '1960s was active in the civil-rights movement. He was Dr. Martin Luther King’s Chicago press secretary for several years.

In 1968 Rose was asked to serve as press secretary to the Chicago Mobilization Committee-the Students for a Democratic Society/Communist Party influenced alliance that wreaked havoc at the Chicago Democratic Party Convention. It was during these violent times that Rose coined the famous phrase-"the whole world is watching"

Through the Mobilization Committee Rose met Marilyn Katz, the SDS security officer for the demonstrations.

Marilyn Katz, Chicago 1968

By the late 1970s Rose was linked to the Chicago coalition of former Trotskyists, Socialist Party members and communists that would in 1982 form Democratic Socialists of America.

In 1982 David S Canter and nine others invited black Democratic Party Congressman Harold Washington to stand for the Chicago mayoralty.

Vernon Jarrett also played a role in persuading Washington to stand, but whether he was part of the 'nine" is unclear.

Washington had a long history with Chicago's communists and socialists. When he accepted, the Communist Party and Democratic Socialists of America formed a multi-racial alliance behind Washington.

Washington, right at a 1981 Democratic Socialist dinner in Chicago

The alliance targetted black voters in a huge voter registration drive on the city's south side.

Rose, Katz and Canter all worked on the successful campaign and all later secured jobs in Washington's administration.

In 1987 Washington successfully re-stood, aided by a young political adviser-David Axelrod.

Though Washington died in office shortly after, the communist/socialist alliance lived on.

In 1992 the alliance elected the Communist/DSA friendly Carol Moseley Braun to the US Senate.

In 2004 it helped put Barack Obama into the same Senate seat.

According to Salon January 2008

When Barack Obama was 22 years old, just out of Columbia University, he took a $10,000-a-year job as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago. It was a shrewd move for a young black man with an interest in politics...

The politician who truly set the stage for Obama's rise was also a South Side congressman: Harold Washington, who was elected mayor of Chicago in 1983...In New York, Obama read about Washington's victory and wrote to City Hall, asking for a job. He never heard back, but he made it to Chicago just months after Washington took office...

Washington dropped dead of a heart attack in his second term. But the confidence he instilled in black leaders became a permanent factor in Chicago politics. His success inspired Jesse Jackson to run for president in 1984, which in turn inspired Obama...Washington also strengthened the community organizations in which Obama was cutting his teeth...Obama's Project Vote, which put him on the local political map, was a successor to the South Side voter registration drive that made Washington's election possible.

Chicago has two unique advantages, says political consultant Don Rose. First, it's in Cook County, which contains nearly half of Illinois' voters. Second, the local Democratic Party is a county wide organization. After Chicago's Carol Moseley Braun beat two white men to win the 1992 Democratic Senate primary, precinct captains in white Chicago neighborhoods and the suburbs whipped up votes for her in the general election.

"They had to go out and sell the black person to demonstrate that the party was still open," says Rose, who sees "direct links" from Washington to Moseley Braun to Obama.

Rose, Canter and Axelrod all worked on Moseley Braun's 1992 campaign. Marilyn Katz worked with Obama on Project Vote, the huge voter registration drive that ensured Moseley Braun's victory.

By the early 2000s Rose, Katz and another Obama associate and former SDS member Carl Davidson had formed Chicagoans Aainst the War in Iraq.

It was this group that organised the 2002 Chicago anti war rally where Obama famously came out strongly against the Iraq War.

The speech was a major turning point in Obama's career. Obama carefully consulted David Axelrod before staking out his position.

Katz incidentally was an Obama fundraiser in 2008 and is an endorser of the Progressives for Obama website. Carl Davidson helped found the organisation and moderates its website.

In August 2008 Don Rose and Marilyn Katz gave an interview to the DSA linked journal In These Times, just before Obama's "coronation" at the Democratic Party Convention in Denver.

Here are some excerpts

ITT 40 years ago this week, Chicago police battled protesters at the DNC. Two ’60s radicals remember the madness, and look to Denver for change...

The ‘68 Democratic National Convention debacle remains a symbol of everything that went wrong with American politics, society and culture in that tumultuous and iconic year. It was five days of mayhem in the Windy City, five days that left the Democratic Party in shambles...

In August 1968, those explosive battles put Chicago at the epicenter of one of the most searing political and social upheavals of the 20th century. In August 2008, a U.S. senator from Chicago will be anointed the first black major-party nominee for the presidency of the United States.

Don Rose...the political wise man has helped elect mayors and senators since then, from Harold Washington to Paul Simon. Now 77, Rose - a mentor to David Axelrod, Obama’s top campaign strategist...

The 1983 election of Harold Washington as Chicago’s first black mayor came courtesy of a progressive coalition of blacks, Latinos and so-called “Lakefront liberals.” Katz and Rose were there, once again, as advisors and operatives.

Katz My straight line goes from ‘66/’68 to the folks who began to work together and formed the core group of the Harold Washington campaign. (Almost) everyone I worked with in 1982 I had met as a kid in ‘68. I believe that Barack Obama could only have emerged in Chicago. Why? Because since ‘68 there was a web of relationships between black civil rights groups, anti-war groups, women’s activities, immigrant rights activities, that has sustained and grown...

ITT What we did here in Chicago had international implications: In ‘68 there was a workers’ movement in Paris, there was a worldwide movement of students. We lost that in the intervening 40 years. Now in 2008, with Barack Obama, we have a renewed sense that the whole world is watching again.

Katz I think that millions of young people are flocking to Barack, as we did to the anti-war movement...

ITT The Democratic Party will gather once again later this month. Everybody is expecting a big party in Denver. Will it be an Obama coronation? Is that what we should be looking for?

So how do you resolve Obama’s move to the center? What about holding his feet to the fire? Don’t we need to keep him true to progressive issues?

Katz: We have to get him into office so then we can be the left opposition. I think it is a delicate balance between those of us who are progressive, how much you push, how much you don’t want to put him in very difficult positions that would embarrass him or give John McCain some advantage...

The other half of the David Axelrod mentoring team, David S Canter (1923/2004) had an even more exotic background.

Born in Boston, David Canter was the son of Harry J Canter secretary of the Boston Communist Party.

While the Communist Party candidate for Massachusetts secretary of state, Canter was arrested for carrying a placard "FULLER—MURDERER OF SACCO AND VANZETTI" " attacking Governor Fuller for the execution of anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti. Harry Canter was tried, convicted and jailed for a year for criminal libel in May 1929.

After his release Canter senior moved his family, including son David to the Soviet Union. The boy must have stayed in the "workers paradise" for some time because according to his obituary in the Chicago Sun-Times of August 30, 2004;

“After his release, Mr. Canter’s father moved the family from Boston to Russia, where the young man developed a love for Russian literature..."

By 1946 the family had turned up in Chicago, where Harry Canter worked for many years as Secretary of Chicago Local 16 of the International Typographical Union.

Harry Canter later moved to San Fransisco, where he remained active in leftist causes. David Canter however remained in Chicago, where he was active in Communist Party circles and briefly as editor of the student paper Chicago Maroon.

In 1958 David Canter graduated from the John Marshall Law School. He also edited the Packinghouse Workers Union newspaper "Champion" newspaper.

According to communist historian Max Friedman

The Packinghouse Workers Union was a long time CPUSA-influenced, if not controlled union that later merged with the Meatcutters to form the CPUSA-run Amalgamated Meatcutters & Butcherworkmens’ Union, lead by identified CPUSA labor leader Abe Feinglass, who was also a VP of the Soviet-KGB front, the World Peace Council..Some hearings on the Packinghouse Workers were held by the House Committee on Un-American Activities and one revealed that the future Rep. Charles Hayes (D-Ill, Chicago) was a high-ranking member of the CPUSA in the Meatcutters Union along with Feinglass.

By 1960 David Canter had teamed up with well known Chicago Communist Party member and colleague from Chicago Maroon days, Leroy Wolins.

The pair owned a company Translation World Publishers, which specialised in publications from and about the Soviet Union. The company soon attracted the attention of the House Un-American Activities Committee, which suspected Canter and Wolins of being conduits for Soviet propaganda.

The committee questioned Canter and Wolins on payments recieved from the Soviet Union

The committee also questioned Canter about his membership of the Communist Party.

The committee went on to find that;

Translation World Publishers was an outlet for the distribution of Soviet
propaganda...this publishing house was subsidized by Soviet funds and was created by known Communists to serve the propaganda interests of the U.S.S.R.

In 1963/64 the Soviet Union actively tried to undermine Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, in favour of Democrat Lyndon Johnson. Goldwater lost the election paving the the way for Johnson's "Great Society".

In their 1989 book "THE KGB AGAINST THE MAIN ENEMY-How the Soviet Intelligence Service Operates against the United States" the US's premier communist researcher Herbert Romerstein and former KGB officer Stanislav Levchenko examined Soviet attempts to blacken Goldwater's name and other Soviet campaigns of the time;

The false charge that Goldwater was a racist was only one of the smear campaigns used against his candidacy by the Soviets and their surrogates. The American Communists covertly covertly assisted in this "active measures" campaign.

A 1963 booklet claimed that Goldwater was conspiring with the John Birch Society to organize a "putsch," or violent insurrection, to take over the United States in 1964. The booklet, Birch Putsch Plans for 1964, contained no address for the publisher, Domino Publications. The author used the not-very imaginative pseudonym, "John Smith..." There was nothing to tie this publication to the communists until an ad for the book in the pro-communist National Guardian for April 25, 1963, listed the publisher as "Domino Publications, Suite 900, 22 West Madison Street, Chicago, Ilinois."

This was in fact the address of Translation World Publishers, which was registered under the Foreign Agents Registration Act as an agent of the Soviet Union. The co-owners, LeRoy Wolins and David S. Canter, were identifed by the House Committee on Un-American Activities as members of the Communist Party USA.

In 1965 Domino Publications of Chicago published a pamphlet attacking the NATO multilateral nuclear force (MLF). The pamphlet, by David S. Canter, was titled MLF-Force or Farce? It presented the Soviet arguments against the NATO nuclear defense.

By 1966 David Canter was working as an insurance salesman and publishing Hyde Park Kenwood Voices with Don Rose.

As stated above, by the early 1980s David Canter was actively trying to move Chicago to the left through Harold Washington.

After Washington accepted Canter's proposal, his vacant congessional seat was taken up by Charles Hayes, the secret Communist Party member from Canter's old Packinghouse Workers Union.

From the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America website

The 1983 Norman Thomas - Eugene V. Debs Dinner was held at the McCormick Inn on Saturday, May 7...Newly elected Mayor Harold Washington was unable to attend at the last minute. Carl Shier, who was to have introduced him, read a message from him instead, and spoke of DSA's considerable role in Washington's election campaign. Congressman Ron Dellums provided the Thomas - Debs address...

A majority of the "grip & grin" shots, interestingly enough, included Charles Hayes, who (regardless of whether he had actually announced at the time of the Dinner) was already running for the Congressional seat left vacant when Harold Washington won the Chicago mayoral election.

Future Cook County Clerk David Orr and Charles Hayes at Chicago DSA's 1983 Thomas-Debs Dinner

In October 2004 David Canter's son, Chicago IT consultant Marc Canter, blogged about his father's relationship with Harold Washington;

One day I stumbled downstairs into our kitchen to meet Harold Washington talking to my father. Harold was the Congressman from our district and my father was explaining to him how he could split the white vote and become the first black mayor of the city of Chicago.

My father had been mentoring, encouraging and working with Harold for 15 years by then and it worked. They won the election and Harold became history...

My father encouraged black politicians to get their piece of the pie...

My father never charged for helping anyone out - and it was only until he was 65 did he ever accept a job from anyone he helped. He was one of those idealistic reds.

Indeed David Canter would not initially take a job under Washington, but after his 1987 re-election Canter relented and became deputy commissioner of streets and sanitation.

Marc Canter has also written;

My brother worked for Harold in D.C. when he was still a Congressman and got a job as a lawyer prosecuting crooked cops - when Harold came to power. My father remained in the inner circle and helped out on all sorts of political and community activities.

Barack Obama was later a beneficiary of the work done for Washington.

From The Nation February 6th 2007

Axelrod and Forest Claypool...opened their own consulting shop, handling mostly long-shot candidates until 1987, when Chicago Mayor Harold Washington hired the firm to help with his re-election. Four years earlier, Washington had won a historic victory...As the Tribune's city hall bureau chief, Axelrod had ringside seats. "Nineteen eighty-three, that was a phenomenal election. Harold Washington--extraordinary guy. I mean, he was the most kinetic campaigner and politician that I've ever met. It was inspiring the way the African-American community came alive around the prospect of electing Harold...

Axelrod sees Obama, who was working in Chicago as a community organizer during the Washington years, as a marker of progress, writing the second act of a story that Washington started...

Twenty-one years later, when Barack ran for the US Senate in the primary against six very strong candidates, he carried every ward on the northwest side except one...I was thinking, and I told Barack, that Harold Washington is smiling down on us
."

While David Canter and Barack Obama probably met through the 1992 Moseley Braun campaign, the two were also both active in Independent Voters of Illinois.

David Canter had become active in the organisation in the 1940s and remained involved up to his death in 2004.

IVI was set up to campaign for endorsed candidates-especially "progressive" candidates.

The government took an interest in IVI as far back as 1944,

In 1944 the FBI prepared a more extensive intelligence report on an active political group, the Independent Voters of Illinois, apparently because it was the target of Communist "infiltration." The Independent Voters group was reported to have been formed:

"...for the purpose of developing neighborhood political units to help in the re-election of President Roosevelt and the election of progressive congressmen. Apparently, IVI endorsed or aided democrats for the most part, although it was stated to be "independent."

Other prominent IVI activists included familiar faces Milton Cohen, Timuel Black and Trotskyist turned Socialist Party member Saul Mendelson.

Like Cohen and Black, Mendelson also went on to join Democratic Socialists of America.

When Mendelson died in 1998, Carol Moseley Braun and Barack Obama both spoke at his memorial service.

Both Barack and Michelle Obama were members of IVI and the organisation endorsed Obama during his 2004 US Senate race.

In July 2004 IVI celebrated its 60th anniversary. Members of the event committee included

Timuel Black and Socialist Party veteran Leon Despres, DSA and Progressives for Obama member Wetty Wilhoitte, a whole host of DSA connected activists and politicians, Dick Simpson, Bernice Bild, Barbara Flynn Currie, Bob Mann, Joe Moore, David Orr, Toni Preckwinkle, Sue Purrington, Carol Moseley Braun and of course David S Canter and Barack Obama.

That may have been the last time Canter and Obama met-he died the following month.

On the 30th of September 2008 Marc Canter wrote in his blog

My father was an old-time politico in Chicago and one of his old buddies - Don Rose writes a column for a Chicago web site called the ‘Chicago Daily Observer’.

In today’s column he writes that Obama has taken a 50-42 lead in the polls.

I’m saying this in honor of my father who fought for civil rights, against the Vietnam War and would be tickled pink to see what Barack is up to.

I know he’s looking down from wherever he is - and laughing right now.

Damn' right he is.
