ACT on Campus Essay Competition Launched
From the ACT on Campus Blog
Today we launched the ACT on Campus 2007 Liberal Thinking essay competition.
The competition is designed to encourage discussion and promote considered thought of political solutions among young people around issues such as;
“Should the state protect people from themselves?”
“What are the best uses for money gained through taxes?”
“When, if ever, should the law discriminate amongst people?”
The competition is open to all New Zealand Secondary students.
The winning student will receive an all expenses paid trip to Wellington, to spend a day with MP Rodney Hide to experience political life first hand.
Their school library will also receive a substantial book voucher.
The runner up will receive an iPod nano.
Organising this competition has been a key milestone for AoC this year. We have been planning it for over a year and have been fundraising for nearly as long. It has taken countless e-mails and telephone calls across the country to organise the minutiae necessary for a successful competition.
We are looking forward to receiving entries from around the country.
The questions are-
1. “Governments have no right to discriminate on the basis of race, gender, or economic situation -To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?”
2. “Nobody, including a government, should have the right to tell you what to do if you are not hurting anyone. -What are your thoughts on this statement?”
3. “What effect does taxation have on the people and/or the economy in New Zealand?”
